His perseverance paid off, and 3M has reaped billions of dollars in cumulative profits because an energetic Hurdler was willing to bend the rules. For a self-diagnosed paralytically innovahion person such as myself, this book really helped explain the author’s ten different types of innovative people. Tom Kelley has done a great job of describing different facets of innovation and describing them in a way that helps the reader to identify areas that they have particular ability in and those they might want to develop.
Putting these to use will be challenging, but so is anything worthwhile, so no real surprise there. The four remaining personas are building roles that apply insights from the learning roles and channel the empowerment from the organizing roles to make innovation happen. The role of the devil’s advocate is nearly universal in business today.
When the Cleveland Indians discovered a renewed winning ability in a brand-new stadium, they demonstrated faced value of the Set Designer. Subsequently, the Director is talented at setting the stage, targeting opportunities, bringing out the best in their players, and getting things done. The appeal of the personas is that they work. Director – The person who knocks down roadblocks and sees the vision through to delivery.

Learning from “The Ten Faces of Innovation”
Isn’t phased by negativity and criticism. I myself identify with the Cross Pollinator. One of his earliest gen was designing the first mouse for Steve Jobs at Apple Computers.

One slight critique I have for the book is that the introduction suggests something very different: Ten different innovator approaches are assembled in this book.
As with most books of this ilk, this is a lot of good advice names matter; find out what the customer really needs, not what he says he needs; face time is better than email packaged with a simple-sounding hook just ten things to learn?! That would be a really interesting discussion in its own right maybe a different book? People who adopt the learning roles are humble enough to question their own worldview, and in doing so they remain open to new insights every day.

Dec 02, Andy rated it really liked it. Innovation is not easy to understand let alone teach it. They have a MacGyver quality of piecing together prototypes out of ordinary materials quickly. There is no longer any serious debate about the keley of innovation in the health and future strength of an organization.

At Ideo, we used to believe that the ideas should speak for themselves. Organizations that tap into the power of the Set Designer sometimes discover remarkable performance improvements that make all the space changes worthwhile.
The biggest takeaway for me was in identifying which of the ten were my ibnovation tendencies. This optimism and perseverance can help big ideas upend the status quo as well as turn setbacks into an organization’s greatest successes—despite doomsday forecasting by shortsighted experts. Building an environment fully engaged in positive change, and a culture rich in creativity and renewal, means creating a company with degrees of innovation.
It felt this was mainly because the author stayed on the surface of describing ‘what’ the roles were and ‘how’ they did their job, rather then talking about things This was a pretty good book about ten different roles people play in doing creative work. Like a movie director has to keep the filming going no matter what disasters befall a production. These basically are leaders who ttom bring out the best in others to help them innovate.
